Dental Sleep Medicine in San Clemente
“ Snoring could be a bigger problem than you think “
Sleep is interwoven into every facet of our health and well-being, our moods and behavior, energy and emotions, marriage, jobs, our very sanity and happiness. There is a growing awareness about the importance of sleep. It is estimated that 15 to 20 million people suffer from snoring or obstructive sleep apnea alone and another 70 million have sleep disorders such as insomnia, restless legs, and other issues. Yet only 10 % are diagnosed.
Recent research has proven that failure to treat sleep breathing disorders may pose a serious health risks since it disrupts normal sleep patters and can reduce normal blood oxygen levels.
Today, with dentistry’s knowledge and diagnostic skills, we can provide assistance for snoring and other sleep disorder patients. Working together with the sleep physician and other health care professionals brings effective “ team management “ to the patient to minimize or correct the problem.
In January of 2007 the American Academy of Sleep Medicine issued new guidelines saying that specially designed Oral Appliances can now be recommended for patient with mild to moderate sleep apnea with clinically proven effectiveness. They also note that continuous positive airway pressure, CPAP therapy should be the first choice. But having more than 60% of CPAP patients no longer wearing CPAP after one year, an alternative to CPAP is greatly needed.
Oral Appliance Therapy has also been found to be an excellent alternative to CPAP for travel.
Our comprehensive Dental Sleep Medicine program includes an in depth prescreening evaluation, custom oral appliance therapy, and individualized titration for optimum results.
